Autolite-sponsored Teams Compete and Showcase Drifting Community at Premier Festival

Lake Forest, IL, June 12, 2018 – Autolite had a strong showing this past weekend, with two Autolite-sponsored drift teams partaking in the Gridlife Midwest Festival.  Gridlife, hosted at Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, Michigan, is a unique clash of cultures culminating in a weekend long celebration of music and motorsports. And while fun was had at the music festival and car show, the Autolite drivers were focused on the event’s third pillar of action: the time attack and drift events.

Participating in these races were Wing It Motorsports and Steele Brothers Racing – each taking time from their busy race seasons and schedules to attend this special event. “This event is one of a kind,” said Mike Steele of Steele Brothers Racing. “With drifting and time attack events, the car show and concerts, it’s a good time no matter what you’re into.”

While Steele Brothers Racing has attended the event in previous years, the 5th annual gathering marked the first trip to Gridlife for Andrew Lewis of Wing It Motorsports. Coming off a malfunction at the first stop in his Formula Drift (FD) season which damaged their car, Lewis and Wing It leveraged this event to introduce their rebuilt car.

“We’ve been rebuilding the car since the wreck in Atlanta, and it was a great opportunity to show people [through our YouTube channel] that you can build a car well and do it on a budget,” acknowledged Lewis. “And Gridlife is a great opportunity to do that, as well. We’ve been wanting to go for a few years, but the timing hasn’t lined up. We were prepared a little earlier this year and were able to grab a slot drifting with fellow FD drivers. I’m so glad we attended, it was an absolute blast.”

Throughout the weekend, featured drivers competed in a wide variety of events, including drifting – the event which both Autolite teams competed. Gridlife gives racers an opportunity to knock doors with other drifters that they normally would not compete with, through an application process aimed at only the most experienced drivers. These teams were also given the chance to introduce motorsports and drifting in particular to those who have not spent much time near the sport.

“All the events are great,” added Mike Steele of Steele Brothers Racing. “I loved hanging out with everyone and giving ride-alongs to people that have never been on a race track or in a drift car. The spectators love it, and that makes the whole event worth it.”

Along with running Autolite XP5243 spark plugs, both teams use FRAM filters. The Autolite team attended the race, as well, showcasing their full line of performance spark plugs, in addition to FRAM racing filters. “We are really excited that we were able to attend Gridlife,” said Jay Buckley, Autolite Director of Motorsports and Event Marketing. “It is an excellent opportunity to teach a new generation of car enthusiasts about our performance products. Having these teams showcased in such a major event is a thrill and a great validator to the quality of our products.”
